Droid 4 gets hands-on treatment, but it's simply a dummy unit

The folks over at TechnoBuffalo have just come across a rather interesting specimen -- it's a dummy unit of the forthcoming Droid 4 from Motorola. While its rumored release date has come and gone, non-functional models such as this are commonly offered to consumers in a retail setting to poke and prod to their heart's content. Nonetheless, the hands-on offers a few interesting details, such as a soft touch backside and insight into the redesigned keyboard, which is described as "the best one yet on a Droid handset." Whether we agree with that assertion will be determined come review time, but if you're interested to see the collection of up-close and personal shots with Moto's latest slider, be sure to check the source below.

Bad economy means poor poor auto maintenance?

A new survey by Consumer Reports shows that the poor economy has forced many Americans to skip needed servicing of their car or truck. And the long-term results of this neglect could be both costly and dangerous.?

Forty percent of those responding said they had deliberately delayed repairs or maintenance on their primary vehicle in the past year. These drivers had put off work on the brakes, tires, exterior light bulbs or mechanical parts ? even though they knew it was needed.?

?This is of great concern because many of these items impact safety and reliability,? says Jeff Bartlett, deputy online automotive editor at ConsumerReports.org.??

Cash-strapped consumers are also holding on to their cars longer. Vehicles require more costly maintenance as they get older.?

?There is a real risk that if you put off a small maintenance or repair item today that it could snowball into a bigger and more costly problem down the road,? Bartlett warns. ?You've got to keep in mind that breaking down along the side of the road is never convenient, it's often costly and may ultimately lead to missing a day or two at work."?

The typical person responding to Consumer Reports in this random survey drives a 2003 vehicle (often bought used) which they?ve owned for five years. And they said they planned to keep it for another five years.

Their vehicle has already gone about 78,000 miles and is quickly approaching a major service interval. Bartlett worries that people who?ve delayed small repairs are more likely to skip this major maintenance which can cost $500 to $1,000 or more.?

One of the most interesting findings of this survey is that people know the consequences of putting off needed repairs or maintenance. ?Overall, 44 percent said it reduces the reliability, safety and value of their vehicle. Almost two in 10 said they are hesitant to take long-distance trips because of those safety and reliability concerns. ?Eight percent said they are becoming ?embarrassed? by their car.?

Consumer Reports just launched a new car repair information service for its online subscribers. The Car Repair Estimator shows you what various repairs cost in your area. There?s also a free section on this page, the Car Repair Encyclopedia, that?s available to anyone.

UK's Prince Philip remains in hospital (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's Prince Philip will spend a fourth night in hospital Monday, as he recovers from treatment for a blocked coronary artery.

Queen Elizabeth II's 90-year-old husband is making "good progress," but will remain under observation at Papworth, a specialist heart hospital in Cambridge, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said Monday.

The spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with policy, said there are no details on when Philip may be released.

Philip underwent a successful coronary stent procedure at the specialist hospital, where he was taken Friday after complaining of chest pains.

"The Duke of Edinburgh continues to make good progress from the procedure. He remains in hospital under observation and in good spirits," the spokesman said.

It was the most serious health scare suffered by Philip, who is known to be active and robust. He has continued to appear at many engagements, most recently taking a 10-day tour of Australia with the queen.

He missed the Royal Family's traditional Boxing Day shooting party on Monday at the queen's private Sandringham estate in Norfolk, an event he usually leads.

Six of Philip's grandchildren, including Princes William and Harry, visited him Sunday in the hospital.

China arrests executives in insider trading crackdown

The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) detailed on its website four cases of market manipulation and insider trading that it has investigated, including two that led to the arrests of former executives at Southwest Securities Co Ltd and Northeast Securities Co Ltd .

The cases are the latest in an increasingly high-profile campaign by CSRC chief Guo Shuqing to stamp out rampant wrongdoing in the country's stock market, which has languished despite the country's nearly double-digit economic growth.

In one case, Qin Xuan, a Northeast Securities manager who advised on the restructuring of a Shenzhen-listed pharmaceutical firm, used the information he obtained in that process to trade the company's stock, and also leaked the information to a friend.

In another case, Ji Minbo, former vice president at Southwest Securities, gained 20 million yuan ($3.2 million) by using information that was not publicly disclosed to trade more than 40 stocks from 2009 to 2011, the CSRC said.

"No matter how concealed illegal practices are, inside traders will eventually be punished by law," the CSRC said in the statement that detailed Qin's case.

The other two cases on which the agency published details involved securities consultants using commentators, research reports and media to talk up stocks they own before selling the securities to make a profit.

China has been stepping up its crackdown against illegal trading activities and tightening supervision against fund managers, brokerages, consultants and executives of listed companies in a bid to build confidence in a stock market where illegal trading activities have been rampant.

In August, former stock analyst Wang Jianzhong was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined 125 million yuan, on top of having illicit earnings of the same amount confiscated, becoming China's first convicted stock market manipulator.

Guo, the former China Construction Bank chairman who became CSRC chief in late October, said in a speech in early December that the regulator would adamantly crack down on accounting fraud, insider trading and other illegal activities.

Earlier this month, the agency exposed the country's biggest-ever case of stock market manipulation that involved an investment company, Guangdong Zhonghengxin, orchestrating "pump-and-dump" schemes related to 552 stocks, out of which it made 426 million yuan.

The CSRC has also recently published rules that would require listed companies to keep records on anyone who may have access to price-sensitive information.

Sadr bloc calls for early elections in Iraq (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? The head of the political bloc of anti-American Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr called on Monday for new elections in Iraq after the biggest crisis in a year saw Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki move against two senior Sunni rivals.

Tensions are rising after Maliki, a Shi'ite, sought the arrest of Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi - accused of running death squads. Maliki also asked parliament to fire Sunni Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq.

The head of Sadr's bloc, part of the ruling Shi'ite-led government, said parliament should be dissolved to try resolve the spat, which has raised concerns about a return to sectarian strife since U.S. troops withdrew a week ago.

Seven people were killed earlier on Monday when a suicide car bomber attacked Iraq's interior ministry in Baghdad. It followed a series of explosions on Thursday in the capital in which 72 people were killed.

"We are in a new phase and have found a lot of problems which give no stability to Iraq... so we will discuss this subject with the National Alliance because we are part of it," Bahaa al-Araji, the head of Sadr's bloc, said in a statement in which he also called for "new and early elections."

Support from Sadr's bloc helped Maliki to a second term following nine months of wrangling after an inconclusive election in March 2010. The National Alliance is the powerful bloc formed when Maliki's party linked with the Sadrists and other Shi'ite groups.

The latest turmoil threatens to scupper Iraq's fragile power-sharing deal that splits posts among the Shi'ite National Aliance, the mainly Sunni-backed Iraqiya party and a bloc representing Kurds.

Hashemi and Mutlaq are two of the most senior figures in Iraqiya, which announced a boycott of parliament ten days ago.

EARLY VOTE

Two senior Sadrist lawmakers said early elections were just one of the possible actions being considered in efforts to try resolve the crisis.

"It is one of the solutions that was presented in case the crisis continues and political blocs fail to reach a solution and Iraqiya insists on continuing to boycott parliament and cabinet sessions," said senior Sadrist lawmaker Amir al-Kinani.

Iraqiya will give an important signal about the future of the power sharing agreement on Tuesday when its members decide whether or not to attend a cabinet meeting.

The party, which is led by secularist Shi'ite former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi but is supported by many Sunnis, said in a statement on Sunday it was willing to participate in talks to resolve the crisis.

"We have received many positive signs from the Iraqiya leaders," said Mushriq Naji, a senior Sadrist lawmaker. "They said they are willing to end this crisis but asked for more time to talk to their top leaders. They asked for two more days."

Violence in Iraq has dropped since the sectarian civil war of 2006-07, when Shi'ite militia and Sunni insurgents often killed thousands of civilians a month.

Many Iraqis fear that the latest political dispute - on clear-cut sectarian lines - could reignite the slaughter, without the buffer of U.S. troops to separate the sides.

Turmoil in Iraq would have a larger impact on the region, where a crisis in Syria is taking on a more sectarian tone and Shi'ite Iran, Sunni Turkey and Sunni Arab Gulf states are looking to increase their influence.

Iraq's Sunni minority has felt marginalized since the rise of the Shi'ite majority after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

Sadr, whose Mehdi Army militia once fought U.S. and Iraqi troops, said in a statement on Sunday that the crisis may lead to one-party rule and hurt Maliki's reputation as a statesman.

Sadr ordered his militia to disarm when he joined mainstream politics in recent years, but splinter groups have continued attacks.

On Monday, an Iraqi official said Asaib al-Haq, the biggest Mehdi Army militant splinter group, had offered to lay down arms and form a political movement to take part in the next election.

"They are willing to lay down their weapons and join the political process after the bilateral security agreement was executed and U.S. troops completed their withdrawal," said Mohammed al-Hamed, spokesman for Maliki's National Reconciliation Advisor. The group could not be reached for comment.

Samir Selmanovic: Faith House Manhattan Tour Bus: Experience Your Neighbor's Faith to Deepen Your Own

Click through the slideshow to look at photos from the Faith House Manhattan Tour Bus:

?? BACK TO ARTICLE

The sacred services we visited on our "Tour Bus" were experiences for our whole mind, body and soul. The photos in this slideshow are from the Tour and other Faith House events with the participating communities. All pictures by Sean McGinn, a member of Faith House Manhattan who has worked for over 15 years on numerous TV and documentary productions. He currently serves as the senior editor at odysseynetworks.org and has received an Emmy award for photography.

We are coming to a realization that religious zealots cannot be fought with indifference. Extremists of all nationalities and religious persuasion feeding on prejudice, legislating exclusion, and resorting to violence cannot be prevailed upon by people with less passion. Telling them to "cool down" and to "be moderate" will not do it. We must allow fires greater than theirs to arise. Our passion for a whole and interdependent word must rise above their passion for a segregated and zero-sum world.

In Faith House Manhattan, a non-profit inter-religious "community of communities," we believe that the time of isolated faith is over. We believe that to know who I am, I must also know who you are. For three years now we have hosted more than 60 Living Room gatherings where people can experiences the practices of another religion (or path, including atheism). We invite all to join our "co-laboratory" of interdependence: "Experience your neighbor's faith, deepen your own."

Our call is to get radical. Very radical. We hold that in today's world, religious people have to remap their reality to include -- in tension and in gratitude -- 'the other.' While our ancestors may have fought for independence, ours is the great struggle for interdependence. 'The other' is not over there, but all around us. While we have been conceiving of the world in vertical terms (whose party is better, whose institution is larger, whose nation is stronger, whose god is bigger), the world is becoming increasingly horizontal, and wonderfully so. Can we learn to be a part of the whole?

This past year, Faith House started a new program with four religious communities in Manhattan, who were part of a "Tour Bus" with reciprocal visits to each of our main religious gatherings. We brought people together to trespass imaginary boundaries while preserving the real ones. From an experience of worship at a Hindu temple, to a Jewish Shabbat service, to a Sufi Zikr, to midweek "Space for Grace" at a major Protestant church -- either as "Interfaith 101? or an opportunity for seasoned pilgrims to be hosts or guests in their own setting -- this seven-week adventure was a unique New York City experience.

One of the participants, Bhakti Center monk and teacher, Chris Fici, summarized the experience this way:

Experience Your Neighbor's Faith, Deepen Your Own. This is a personal revelation a lot of us have shared recently on the Faith House Bus Tour, as the different sounds, colors, tastes and waves of devotion we have experienced together in our different houses of faith have made a deep communal resonance in our souls.

Too often (at least from my own perspective) our own practice can become caught in the mechanical. Living as a monk, in an intense and insulated environment, I often see how my consciousness during our morning meditation is directed towards how tired I am, or how I might be upset with this monk or that monk. The beautiful essence of our prayers and singing and dancing together remains lost to me.

As I was soaking up the whirling sanctity at our wonderful Bus Tour event at the Dergah of the Nur Ashki Jerrahi Sufi Order, the pain of my own disconnection in my own practice became manifest, and that void was quickly filled by the wonderful and mystical people I saw around me, deeply absorbed in the love and vision of the Divine. I came to realize that what they were experiencing was something I had access to every day, if I chose to. I saw very clearly how we were all pearls on the same thread of God's mercy. I returned to my own community and practice with a sense of renewal that has stayed with me ever since.

The interfaith experience is very important for me, and I think for all of us as a common human family. The turbulence of our age calls for a communication between peoples of faith that transcends our superficial differences and allows us to drink from the immense well of wisdom God has given us, to give solace and take profound action to help cure our shared ills.

This turbulence also calls from us a tremendous maturity from our humility, from a recognition that we cannot possibly have the exclusive answers, that the pieces of the puzzle we need come from our brothers and sisters in faith. In Thomas Merton's journals of his final and fateful journey to India and Indonesia, where he breathed deeply of the eastern faiths that had always intrigued and inspired him, he related a realization in this regard that has deeply touched me.

He says that those who are mature in their faith are able to enter into the experience, philosophy, and practice of another faith and gain a practical wisdom which they can take back into their own renewed and strengthened spiritual life. This is the essence of my own personal adventure in interfaith. To be able to see of and hear of and speak about and taste of and move within the common thread of our faiths together is one of the most profound experiences I have ever had in my life. It links me to the maturity needed to answer the spiritual call of our time, and I imagine it may do so for you as well.

I am always eager to point out to others that New York City is a deeply spiritual place. I want to encourage others to develop the vision of the great rivers of faith which run through this town, which are not always visible beyond the surface tumult and loosely organized chaos.

When you come to New York City, you can enjoy a Broadway show, walk the Brooklyn Bridge, check out that special night club you found on Google, enjoy this gastronomical paradise with more than 4,000 restaurants, but don't miss the rich undercurrent of spirituality you can find at every corner. The many religious traditions can help you understand yourself, and perhaps rekindle a passion for your own faith, an encounter that will change you forever. You might even come back to your home and do something radical like taking time to understand the faith of the other, whose life is now inextricably intertwined with yours.

Read articles and reflections about each stop on the Faith House tour here.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Jairus Byrd and Spencer Johnson returned Tim Tebow interceptions for touchdowns on consecutive plays in the fourth quarter to help the Buffalo Bills snap a seven-game skid and seal a 40-14 win over the Denver Broncos on Saturday.

Tebow finished with a career-worst four interceptions as the Broncos (8-7) fell into a tie with Oakland for first place in the AFC West. Denver lost its second in a row while squandering a chance to inch closer to clinching its first playoff berth since 2005.

Byrd scored on a 37-yard return with 8:03 left and Johnson had a 17-yarder just 18 seconds later as Buffalo (6-9) closed its home schedule with a victory. C.J. Spiller rushed for a career-best 111 yards and a touchdown, and Leodis McKelvin scored on an 80-yard punt return.

Spiders' sexual cannibalism is for offspring

The unkind act of butchering and eating your mate after sex, typified by the female black-widow spider and praying mantis, may make for healthier babies, new research suggests.

The researchers found that a male orb-web spider makes the ultimate evolutionary sacrifice: giving his life for the health of his offspring.

    1. Was Shroud created in a flash? Claims rise again

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Italian researchers resurrect the idea that the Shroud of Turin's mysterious image could only have been created by a powerful flash ? but skeptics still aren't buying it.

Sexual cannibalism is the act of one partner eating the other after sex. In the orb-web spider Argiope bruennichi, the female tries to grab and wrap up the male at the onset of mating so she can snack on him during sex. In the lab, only about 30 percent of the males survive their first mating, but by letting the female gnaw on them, the males prolong the sex act, making it more likely they will inseminate their partner.

Of these survivors, half go on to find a second mate, while the others try again for the same female. Due to the male's anatomy, two copulations is the limit. (When you are facing a life without sex, is it really worth it to go on?)

"Two main hypotheses explain the evolution of sexual cannibalism," study researcher Klaas Welke, of the University of Hamburg in Germany, told LiveScience in an email. The males might be offering themselves up "to gain access to mating opportunities and to prolong their mating duration." Or, Welke said, it could be a "paternal investment into their own offspring, and they provide females with nutrients."

In the case of the orb-web spider, males tend to be much smaller than their mates ; in this species, they're only one-tenth as heavy, and researchers weren't sure how much nutritional benefit the females can gain from such pipsqueak partners.

To see if eating their mates gave female spiders a nutritional advantage, the researchers divided the female orb-web spiders of their laboratory collection into three groups, allowing them to mate with one, two or three males. Half of each group of females also was allowed to eat their mates, while in the other instances, the researchers reached in and saved the male from his partner's clutches.

They then analyzed each female's eggs and resulting offspring. They counted and weighed the eggs and monitored how many offspring survived simulated cold-weather scenarios ? about 46 degrees Fahrenheit (8 degrees Celsius) ? and a 20-week stint of starvation.

The researchers thought that perhaps the nutritional bonus from multiple mates and meals would have an impact on females. It didn't. "We were surprised, because we had expected that any effect of male consumption would increase with every additional male consumed," Welke said.

What they did see, however, was that any cannibalism led to healthier offspring that survived better and had bigger eggs.

"Our findings suggest a paternal investment of males into their offspring," Welke said. "Sexual cannibalism may increase male reproductive success and may be very beneficial in a species with a high paternity insurance and a low rate of polyandry as found in Argiope bruennichi."

The study is published in the January 2012 issue of the journal Animal Behaviour.

Anti-piracy bill creates fear about ???aggressive??? Justice Dept. that ???makes mistakes??? (Daily Caller)

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith?s anti-piracy bill, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), caused significant waves on its maiden voyage into congressional waters. New criticisms of the legislative proposal, however, make the Justice Department walk the plank.

James Gattuso, a senior research fellow in regulatory policy at the Heritage Foundation, and?Julian Sanchez, a research fellow at the Cato Institute, discussed their concerns about the bill during an event at the Heritage Foundation on Tuesday.

Gattuso told The Daily Caller that the authority extended to the DOJ under SOPA would be problematic ?even if Eric Holder were not Attorney General.?

?The bigger lesson here is that the DOJ makes mistakes,? said Gattuso.

?I think that they have been already pretty aggressive using the powers that they already have, and they?seem extraordinarily averse to admitting mistakes,? cautioned Sanchez.

The bill ? heavily criticized by a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers, free-market oriented think tanks and left-leaning foundations?for its ?broad reach? ? is expected to see another full committee markup after the holiday recess. The bill enjoys the support of 31 co-sponsors, in addition to advocates?including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Motion Picture Association of America, the Recording Industry Association of America, Comcast and GoDaddy.

SOPA would place authority over websites that facilitate copyright infringement under the Justice Department. Under SOPA, in order to obtain a court order to block a site or sever its financial ties,?the Justice Department would have to prove to a federal court?that the site violates copyright law.

The stakes, both sides of the debate claim, are high ? and both sides have lobbied lawmakers with sophisticated campaigns.

Supporters of SOPA highlight what they claim are billions of dollars lost every year to online intellectual property theft. They also say American consumers are in physical danger from the harmful effects of counterfeit drugs sold through so-called ?rogue? websites.

SOPA opponents, on the other hand, fear the bill would facilitate free-speech violations and that it would give a trigger-happy DOJ led by Attorney General Eric Holder more power to police the Internet. The bill?s economic consequences on American businesses, opponents also argue, would be devastating.

Holder in the past has expressed a favorable attitude toward greater government control over the Internet.

House oversight committee Chairman Darrell?Issa is already investigating Holder?s involvement in Operation Fast and Furious. Holder,?unwilling to be held accountable by Congress, recently said criticism from conservatives?is due to racism, not his job performance.

There is also tension over which House committee ? oversight, judiciary, or another ??would have jurisdiction over foreign online piracy. Issa authored an alternate bill that gives the International Trade Commission authority to treat foreign piracy as a trade dispute.

Issa recently criticized Holder in a statement, warning that SOPA would give ?Attorney General Eric Holder?s Department of Justice broad new powers to police the Internet.?

Smith retorted, ?Comments that the entire Justice Department cannot be trusted because of Attorney General Eric Holder demean the hard work of thousands of career prosecutors and attorneys-in-the-field who have no political, personal or professional affiliation with the Obama administration.?

Walgreen 1Q profit drops on Express Scripts fight (AP)

NEW YORK ? Drugstore operator Walgreen Co.'s fiscal first-quarter earnings fell more than 4 percent due in part to a slow flu season and its decision to leave the Express Scripts Inc. pharmacy network next month.

Walgreen said it would consider a reasonable offer from Express Scripts but reported no progress in negotiations. A three-year contract between the companies ends Dec. 31, and since June, Walgreen and Express Scripts have said they were preparing to stop doing business, jeopardizing billions of dollars in sales for Walgreen.

Shares of Walgreen fell $2.05, or 6.1 percent, to $31.45 in premarket trading.

The nation's largest drugstore chain said the decision to stop doing business with Express Scripts cost a penny per share in sales at pharmacies open at least a year and a penny per share in expenses during the quarter.

The drugstore chain also said a delay in the cough, cold and flu season hurt earnings by another penny per share. The company administered 5 million flu shots through Nov. 30 compared with 5.6 million a year ago.

Walgreen said Wednesday net income fell to $554 million, or 63 cents per share, from $580 million, or 62 cents per share, a year ago, when it had more shares outstanding. Revenue grew 4.7 percent to $18.16 billion.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected, on average, earnings of 67 cents per share and $18.24 billion in revenue.

The Deerfield, Ill., company gets $5.3 billion in annual revenue from Express Scripts, which pays Walgreen and other drugstores to fill prescriptions. But it said it would rather give up that revenue than continue filling unprofitable prescriptions.

"While we remain open to any fair and competitive offer from Express Scripts, we firmly believe that accepting their proposal was not in the best long-term interests of our shareholders," Walgreen CEO Greg Wasson said in a statement.

Walgreen is trying to keep as many of those prescriptions as possible by making its own arrangements with companies and health plans. The company says it expects to keep 97 to 99 percent of its fiscal 2011 prescription volume in the new fiscal year, but analysts say Walgreen will lose most of the Express Scripts prescriptions.

Express Scripts also is trying to buy Medco Health Solutions Inc., another large pharmacy benefits manager. If that deal goes through, Walgreen may lose Medco's clients over time.

Walgreen's selling, general and administrative expenses also climbed 5 percent to $4.2 billion because of its acquisition of drugstore.com and other items.

Earlier this month, Walgreen said sales at stores open at least a year grew 2.5 percent during the quarter. However the Express Scripts fight reduced those sales by 1.1 percent. Sales at stores open at least a year are considered a key measurement of retailer health because they exclude results from stores that have opened or closed in the last year.

The company operates 7,812 drugstores nationwide.

Barry Bonds Sentenced to 30 Days House Arrest, Probation For Obstruction of Justice

Disgraced baseball great Barry Bonds was sentenced to 30 days house arrest and probation today - basically a slap on the wrist for the juiced up home run king.

A federal judge sentenced Bonds to probation and home confinement for obstructing justice during a grand jury probe into a firm that sold steroids to athletes.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston stayed the sentence until a higher court rules on the appeal of Bonds' conviction, which resulted from the years-long BALCO probe.

Barry Bonds: What a ...

The sentence caps the highest-profile trial in a 10-year PED case that ensnared athletes in several sports and revealed the use of previously undetectable steroids.

A number of athletes admitted using steroids during secret grand jury proceedings in 2003 related to the investigation of a Bay Area steroids manufacturer BALCO.

Federal prosecutors in 2007 charged Bonds with lying to the grand jury. A criminal jury in April convicted him of obstruction of justice for giving evasive answers.

Responding to questions about steroid use with non sequiturs and rambling digressions, Bonds basically dug his own grave there, not that he'll be punished for it.

The jury failed to reach a verdict on three other charges, and prosecutors asked the judge to sentence Bonds to 15 months in prison. Clearly that didn't work out.

After the hearing, Dennis Riordan, a lawyer for Bonds, said he believes the conviction will be thrown out on appeal, which it very well might, knowing this case.

His conviction in the court of public opinion? Another story entirely.

Manning's sexual orientation is raised in hearing (AP)

FORT MEADE, Md. ? The young Army intelligence specialist accused of passing government secrets spent his 24th birthday in court Saturday as his lawyers argued his status as a gay soldier before the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" played an important role in his actions.

Lawyers for Pfc. Bradley Manning began laying out a defense to show that his struggles as a gay soldier in an environment hostile to homosexuality contributed to mental and emotional problems that should have barred him from having access to sensitive material.

Manning is accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of sensitive items to the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, including Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, State Department cables and a military video of a 2007 American helicopter attack in Iraq that killed 11 men, including a Reuters news photographer and his driver.

The Obama administration says the released information has threatened valuable military and diplomatic sources and strained America's relations with other governments. Manning's lawyers counter that much of the information that was classified by the Pentagon posed no risk.

The military is conducting a hearing in a small courtroom on an Army post outside Washington to determine whether prosecutors have enough evidence to bring Manning to trial, where he could face a term of life in prison as a traitor.

Prosecutors began presenting evidence to substantiate the charges against Manning.

Army criminal investigators described evidence they collected that links Manning to the WikiLeaks website's collection of U.S. military and diplomatic secrets.

But among the first issues to arise Saturday was whether Manning's sexual orientation is relevant to the case against him.

The basis for the charges Manning faces are transcripts of online chats with a confidant-turned-government-informant in which Manning allegedly confesses his ties to WikiLeaks and also reveals he is gay.

Maj. Matthew Kemkes, a defense lawyer, asked Special Agent Toni Graham, an Army criminal investigator, whether she had talked to people who believed Manning was gay or found evidence among his belongings relating to gender-identity disorder. The condition often is described as a mental diagnosis in which people believe they were born the wrong sex.

Graham said such questions were irrelevant to the investigation. "We already knew before we arrived that Pfc. Manning was a homosexual," Graham said.

Prosecutors objected several times to the questions. Kemkes responded that if the government can argue that Manning intended to leak secrets, "what is going on in my client's mind is very important."

During its cross examination of Graham, Manning's defense team also sought to convince the court that not all of the material he is accused of leaking is classified.

Graham, who collected evidence from Manning's living quarters and workplace, testified that among the items seized was a DVD marked "secret" that contained a military video showing the 2007 incident in which Apache attack helicopters gunned down unarmed men in Iraq.

The video was taken from the cockpit of one the helicopters. WikiLeaks posted the video in April 2010, sparking questions about the military's rules of engagement and whether more needed to be done to prevent civilian casualties. The gunners can be heard laughing and referring to the men as "dead bastards."

Kemkes, one of Manning's lawyers, asked Graham whether she knew the video was unclassified. She said she didn't. "In fact, it was an unclassified video," Kemkes said.

At the time the video was posted by WikiLeaks, the Pentagon called it a breach of national security and it was believed to be secret.

Although WikiLeaks had been posting sensitive information to the Web since 2006, release of the Apache video drew worldwide attention to the organization as it prepared to publish secret documents on the war in Afghanistan.

Manning's appearances Friday and Saturday in the Fort Meade courtroom mark the first time he has been seen in public after 19 months in detention. The Oklahoma native comes to court in Army camouflage fatigues and wearing dark-rimmed glasses. Slight and serious, he takes notes during the proceedings.

An Army appeals court on Friday rejected a defense effort to have the presiding officer, Lt. Col. Paul Almanza, because of alleged bias. Separately, lawyers for WikiLeaks and founder Julian Assange are asking the military's highest appeals court to guarantee two seats in the Fort Meade courtroom.

Manning's hearing is open to the public, with limited seating. Inside the courtroom, no civilian recording equipment is allowed. Instead of a judge, a presiding officer delivers a recommendation as to whether prosecutors have enough evidence to bring a suspect to trial. A military commander then makes the final decision.

The case has spawned an international support network of people who believe the U.S. government has gone too far in seeking to punish Manning.

More than 100 people gathered outside Fort Meade for a march in support of Manning, some holding signs declaring "Americans have the right to know. Free Bradley Manning" and "Blowing the whistle on war crimes is not a crime."

Todd Anderson, 64, said he drove from New York City to take part. "I think this man showed a great deal of courage, the kind of thing I wouldn't have the courage to do, and I really consider him to be a hero," Anderson said.

Juline Jordan, 46, said she flew in from Detroit just for the day. "I support what he did because he exposed some horrific war crimes and horrific things done at the hands of the United States government and the Department of Defense, and he's a hero for that," Jordan said.

In London, several dozen protesters from gay organizations, the Occupy London protest camp and other groups rallied outside the U.S. Embassy Saturday calling for Manning's release and offering birthday wishes.

A Little Backstory on the world of 'Chef-erella'

Monsterpedia

At some point into the near future, about 2025, the world had used scientific breakthroughs made in 2012 to start fixing the earth as best they could. The process was not easy. Most cities, and economically efficient towns remained rather urban. Otherwise, there was more natural land on the Earth since the amazing change that had been completed in late 2013- early 2014. At this same time, Animals were beginning to evolve some, immediately studied and learned, for there were many new uses for these creatures, as well as dangers that had to be understood?

Hunting is now a major factor to the Earth with the huge numbers of these animals. Even today though, some species are still endangered. Poachers and excess hunting is still possible, by breaking hunting laws and code.

Restaurants are starting to flourish these days with all the new combinations of food. New pets have been showing up, some even reminding us of a certain video game about animals with superpowers?

She was the new girl in town. Her Family moved in from Japan to Rover City, where she would attend an American high school, and learn to live with a place most unfamiliar. She and her parents were off to join her uncle in his restaurant business, which had picked up after half a year of little luck, due to these sudden changes in the world. She remembered it being called the 'Flavor Rush,' her uncle's dream always to master cooking, the art passed down through the girl's family for years, her parents being some of the few to break tradition. That is until she discovered her almost magical ability to make a treasure for the tongue with her hands with relative ease, and has since been working to become assistant chef.

Then came her life at school, which was at hand now. She wasn't too social, but she had a couple friends. However, there was her one strange infatuation with a young man from her classes. She was too shy to ever say 'hello' or anything. She did notice that other girl though, who happened to claim the boy the girl liked, who was from a more successful, popular gourmet restaurant. The rich girl with the fine clothes, golden hair, and eyes like the ocean, and her interest in this same boy, while the boy taking no interest in the 'relationship' himself. Her parents didn't see it, but her uncle, eccentric and sympathetic, had put together the perfect idea to help his little niece: The Aigyuudon, a bowl of beef, rice, and other things like garlic, invented in 1871 and known as 'Gyuudon.' The day the dish had been invented, it became the girl's family's tool of deciding love, for the one who ate the bowl would have their future intertwined with the creator of the dish.

Okay, you see where I'm going with that 'Aigyuudon,' so let me make this clear: The uncle tricked the girl into making the Aigyuudon, and at school, manipulated a couple events so the beef bowl would fall into the hands of the boy, and sure enough, the young man ate it, disliking the awful school food, and digging into the bowl. The young man had been astonished by what he ate, immediately shedding a couple tears of joy, and wanting more very badly, eventually discovering the Flavor Rush restaurant.

But little does the Uncle and the girl realize, he's in for far more than just getting together with the girl. He will be forced to marry her, and produce at least one child, preferably a son, some time when they become adults. As if that wasn't enough, the girl's family starts to make him work for their restaurant at minimum wage, one minute being a busboy, dishwasher, janitor, and god knows what else. That is until he shows off his amazing physical power, and is immediately given the main job of hunting fresh meat for special dishes.

With the girl at his side. You see, the family is pushing for them to become not only a couple, but a tag team in the world of food? But there are some difficulties to their future: The Rich girl girl before is probably pissed, other restaurants don't like competition, the animals will be dangerous, and worst of all, the Aigyuudon love oath can be broken under certain special circumstances?

3) The Young Man (JayZeroSnake)

A simple american teen who enjoys a good bite. After eating the Aigyuudon, he is bound to be with the new girl. He's very strong, and capable of taking on some tough animals.
