Oops! Twitter's new video-sharing service lacks privacy settings

12 hrs.

Twitter's new video-sharing service Vine?feels a lot like Instagram for videos. It's neat, easy to use, and can produce fun clips. Just?one problem: There are no privacy settings whatsoever.

Right now, you can create and share Vine?videos using an iOS app?only. All you have to do is point your iPhone (or iPod Touch) at something and press your finger to the screen to record a clip up to six seconds in length (both sound and motion are captured, of course). Once satisfied with your final product, you can share it to Vine, Twitter and Facebook.?

Unfortunately as soon as you post?the clip to Vine, you've lost any control over who views it or interacts with it. There's no way to create a private Vine account nor can you choose who may follow you or view your profile on the video-sharing service. And while you can delete comments from your Vine posts, there's no way to block or report abusive users. (Though you can report videos as inappropriate.)

NBC News asked Twitter about the lack of privacy settings on Vine, and we were?pointed to the service's Help site, which confirms what we've experienced. ?"Profiles and videos on Vine are public, and anyone on the service can view them," a note declares before clarifying that?you can certainly?use Vine to create a video and save it to your Camera Roll rather than sharing it.?But this?isn't enough to?satisfy our need for actual privacy controls. We're instead left with the promise that the team?behind the service will "add more ways for you to control the visibility of your content in a future version of Vine."?

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

(AP) ? The World Anti-Doping Agency disputes a claim by former cycling federation leader Hein Verbruggen that discussing suspicious doping samples with athletes was once normal practice in sports.

WADA says such a policy "totally contradicts the purpose of an effective anti-doping program."

The agency says it has "no evidence of other international federations 'discussing atypical blood test results, or other test results' with athletes."

Verbruggen, the International Cycling Union president from 1991-2005, claimed Wednesday it was the governing body's former policy and "indeed also of other federations."

WADA has criticized the UCI for arranging for Lance Armstrong to meet with a laboratory director in 2002 after his tests had suspicious levels of EPO.

WADA says any federation discussing tests with athletes "leave(s) itself open to criticism with regards to its impartiality and integrity."

West African leaders gather for Mali summit

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? West African leaders headed to a special Mali summit in Ivory Coast on Saturday to discuss how to step up their role as the French-led military intervention to oust Islamic extremists from power entered its second week.

Neighboring countries are expected to contribute around 3,000 troops to the operation in Mali, aimed at preventing the militants who rule northern Mali from advancing further south toward the capital.

While some initial contributions from Togo and Nigeria have arrived to help the French, concerns about the mission have delayed other neighbors from sending their promised troops so far.

Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara said Saturday that Mali's neighbors must work together to eradicate terrorism in the region.

"No other nation in the world, no other region in the world will be spared" if large swaths of the Sahel are allowed to become a 'no man's land,'" he said.

At Saturday's meeting, the big issue will be sorting out a central command for the African force, a French official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly discuss the sensitive security matters.

Nigerian Gen. Shehu Usman Abdulkadir is expected to be named the force commander.

Speaking Saturday on French 3 television, French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Drian said France now has 2,000 troops in Mali and has mobilized 2,900 in the overall operation in places like Senegal, Burkina Faso and Niger.

He said France "could go beyond" the 2,500 troops initially announced for Mali, and said that at full deployment, Operation Serval would involve some 4,000 troops in the region.

Meanwhile, Le Drian insisted "there has been no ground combat in Diabaly" involving French troops,

French forces have moved around Diabaly to cut off supplies to the Islamist extremists who took the town on Monday, said a French official who spoke on condition of anonymity to be able to discuss sensitive security matters.

Mali once enjoyed a reputation as one of West Africa's most stable democracies with the majority of its 15.8 million people practicing a moderate form of Islam.

That changed last March, following a coup in the capital which created the disarray that allowed Islamist extremists to take over the main cities in the distant north.

The U.N. refugee agency said Friday that the fighting in Mali could force as many as 700,000 people to flee their homes in the coming months.

Utah State basketball: Aggies on the road at New Mexico State

College hoops ? USU takes 13-game winning streak into matchup.

Las Cruces, N.M. ? The Utah State basketball team will try to defend its 13-game winning streak on Thursday night when it visits the other Aggies in the Western Athletic Conference.

New Mexico State (10-8, 4-2) hosts Utah State (14-1, 5-0) at the Pan-American Center in what should be the toughest conference test so far. NMSU will have a height advantage in the front court, something Utah State hasn?t dealt with much this year.

Latest tweets from Kyle Goon (newest at the top)

Freshman Sim Bhullar, a 7-foot-5 center, will be the biggest man on the court, and NMSU boasts three other scorers averaging around double-digit points. Sophomore guard Daniel Mullings leads the team with 14.9 points per game, but his defensive ability could be the bigger threat in guarding Preston Medlin.

Medlin is on a tear, scoring more than 20 points in five of his last 10 games. The Aggies are also hoping for big games out of post players Jarred Shaw and Kyisean Reed, who are averaging a combined 25.2 points and 15.5 rebounds per contest.

Just say neigh: Horsemeat in burgers horrifies UK

LONDON (AP) ? In Britain, a horse is a horse ? not a main course.

Tesco, the country's biggest supermarket chain, took out full-page newspaper ads Thursday to apologize for an unwanted ingredient in some of its hamburgers: horsemeat.

Ten million burgers have been taken off shop shelves after the revelation that beef products from three companies in Ireland and Britain contained horse DNA. Most had only small traces, but one burger of a brand sold by Tesco had meat content that was 29 percent horse. The contrite grocer told customers that "we and our supplier have let you down and we apologize."

Reaction to the scandal in Britain goes beyond concerns about contaminated food. While people in some countries happily dine on equine flesh, in the land of Black Beauty and "National Velvet," the idea fills many with horror.

BRITAIN SAYS NEIGH

Mary Creagh, environment spokeswoman for the opposition Labour Party, reflected the feelings of many when she said Thursday that eating horsemeat is "strongly culturally taboo in the United Kingdom."

She was echoing prohibitions in Western cultures that go back to 732 A.D., when Pope Gregory III declared horse-eating a pagan practice.

Horsemeat has never been a staple of European diets, but from the mid-19th century it was eaten in countries including Britain as cheap filler food for the poor.

"It tended to be in burgers and potted meats and sausages as cheap supplementary food," said culinary historian Annie Gray. "And it wasn't always labeled, just as we're finding out at the moment."

The sale of horsemeat in the U.K. continued through the 1930s Depression and World War II, when many foods were rationed.

But hippophagy ? eating horses ? never really caught on in Britain, a land of horse lovers and beef eaters.

"The eating of beef is totally symbolic of being English," Gray said ? so horse was always going to be seen as a poor substitute.

VIVE LA DIFFERENCE

Horsemeat is eaten in European countries such as France, Belgium and Italy, as well as by many in China, among the traditionally nomadic people of Central Asia and in parts of Latin America.

In France, specialist horse butchers and supermarkets sell "viande chevaline." There and in Belgium it's popular both cooked and raw, in a form of steak tartare.

Continental journalists have felt the need to explain the context of the Anglo-Irish scandal to readers. An article in 20minutes.fr said the horsemeat discovery had caused a "psychological shock for British consumers, who are no fans of horsemeat butchers." France's Le Figaro newspaper explained that the Irish "are known for their respect of this animal ... and are not in the habit of eating its meat."

Animal-rights campaigners including actress Brigitte Bardot have made little headway against the horsemeat trade, though concerns have arisen over animal welfare. In Belgium, the supermarket chain Lidl stopped selling horsemeat in 2011 after concerns about the treatment of animals by its Latin American suppliers.

Some of the horsemeat eaten in Europe comes from Britain, whose love of horses doesn't stop it from sending thousands of horses a year abroad to be killed for meat.

THE HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE?

Fans of horsemeat say it is extremely healthy: low in cholesterol and fat, high in protein and omega-3 acids.

"I think it's delicious," said Caroline Roddis, a freelance writer who organizes Flogging a Dead Horse, a series of dining events at which horsemeat is served. "It is slightly sweeter than beef and it has got such a good depth of flavor it is hard not to like it."

Roddis reports a healthy interest in her London events, which draw as many as 50 British and foreign diners a night to sample the delights of horseflesh.

She hopes the "horseburger" scandal will make people think more about what they eat.

Officials say the source of the contamination may be a powdered beef-protein additive imported from Spain and the Netherlands to pad out the cheapest burgers, which typically contain between 60 and 70 percent meat alongside flour, water and other fillers.

"We don't really think (about) what we are putting in our mouths," Roddis said. "You go to the supermarket and you buy something that looks pinkish and has a label and you don't really think about where it comes from. I think we've really lost touch."

CHANGING TASTES?

The handful of hardy entrepreneurs who sell horsemeat in Britain say the scandal has ? paradoxically ? been good for business, raising the profile of a meat few had considered.

"We've been very busy the last couple of days," said Paul Webb, director of Exotic Meats, a company in the English Midlands that sells horse burgers, sausages and steaks alongside cuts of crocodile, kangaroo and impala.

He says typical horsemeat buyers are "middle-aged, middle-class people who want to try something different."

"We've done some radio phone-ins, and 90 percent of the comments were 'I'd try it,'" Webb said.

But not everyone was convinced: "Some people say, 'I have a horse. It'd be like eating my grandmother.'"

Sniffing immune cells: Immune cells on the move are guided by touch and smell

Jan. 17, 2013 ? Research at IST Austria shows how immune cells navigate through the skin by sensing graded patterns of immobilized directional cues.

A research paper by the group of Michael Sixt, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria), published January 17 in Science provides new insights into how immune cells find their way through tissues. The findings provide the first evidence for directed cell migration along concentration gradients of chemical cues immobilized in tissues, a concept that has long been assumed but never experimentally proven.

Immune cells constantly patrol our body to check for foreign invaders, such as bacteria or viruses. To do so they leave the blood stream, actively crawl through tissues and finally re-enter the circulation via lymphatic vessels. Research from the laboratory of Michael Sixt elucidates how the cells are guided through tissues like the skin.

It is thought that cells either sense their environment by 'touching' or ?smelling?: They adhere to structural molecules like connective tissue proteins using adhesion receptors. Or they 'smell' soluble signal molecules with specialized surface receptors. Especially solutes are thought to act as directional cues as they tend to be more concentrated closer to the production source. Like one can find a flower by following its scent, cells are able to follow such soluble gradients. Both principles, touching and smelling, have been demonstrated to work in cell culture experiments. But how cell guidance functions in real tissues is still not known.

According to the new study, immune cells in mouse skin use a mixed strategy. They follow gradients of guidance cues, which are not soluble but immobilized to sugar molecules in the connective tissue. In their newly published work, the scientists around Michael Sixt visualized both the immune cells, in this case dendritic cells, and the cue, the chemokine CCL21, and recorded movies of how the cells navigate through living tissues. The researchers found that the chemokine is exclusively produced by the lymphatic vessel. From there it distributes into the surrounding tissue, forming a concentration gradient.

In collaboration with Robert Hauschild and Tobias Bollenbach, two physicists at IST Austria, detailed quantitative maps of the chemokine distribution were drawn and compared with the migratory routes of the cells. Observation and quantitative prediction matched well: a cell can find the next lymphatic vessel by comparing the concentration of chemokine across its surface and then crawling towards the higher concentration. For this to work the cell only needs to be of a certain size because the gradients are noisy. A small cell would easily get trapped on a local concentration peak as it cannot "see" that there is an even higher peak nearby. To prove their concept, the scientists outcompeted the chemokine gradients in the tissue by applying excess chemokine from the outside. They found that this confuses the cells on their way to the lymphatic vessel. When they released the anchoring of the chemokine to the tissue, cells also got confused, demonstrating that the gradients are not soluble but bound to the tissue.

No. 10 Gators visit Texas A&M, host Missouri in tough two-game stretch

GAINESVILLE - Florida Gators center Patric Young should learn something about himself and his team during the next few days.

The 6-foot-9, 249-pound junior hopes to play in the NBA, and will experience the grind of two demanding games in the span of less than 48 hours. Meanwhile, the No. 10 Gators (11-2, 2-0 SEC) will find out where they fit in the conference pecking order.

The telling two-game stretch begins with a nationally televised visit Thursday night at 7 to Texas A&M (12-3, 2-0). Florida will return home to face No. 17 Missouri at 2 p.m. Saturday.

"If we come away with two wins, that would be great for us and give us some momentum," Young said. "It would show that we can really win this league this year."

Texas A&M is coming off an 83-71 win Saturday at struggling Kentucky (10-5, 1-1). Senior guard Elston Turner led the Aggies with 40 points on just 19 shots against the defending national champions.

"The thing that was impressive to me, half his number of shots didn't even equal the amount of points he scored," Donovan said. "That game was pretty efficient."

Missouri, on the other hand, fell 64-49 Saturday at surprising Ole Miss (14-2, 3-0). But the Tigers are the SEC's only ranked team besides Florida, finished 30-5 last season under for Miami coach Frank Haith and have wins this year against Illinois, Virginia Commonwealth and Stanford, which are a combined 38-14.

The unranked Aggies give the Gators a chance for their first quality road win of the season. Florida squandered a five-point lead in the final minute during a 65-64 loss Dec. 15 at Arizona and lost 67-61 seven days later at Kansas State.

With Kentucky struggling and the league ranked just ninth in the RPI, the Gators are expected to be in the SEC mix until the end. But injuries and the inability to beat top teams on the road are potential red flags.

Small forward Casey Prather, the Gators' most athletic player, is out for at least a week with a high ankle sprain - an injury that often needs extended rest to fully heal. Meanwhile, forward Erik Murphy (cracked rib) and Will Yegeute (right knee tendinitis) battle lingering injuries.

Yeguete had 10 points and 13 rebounds in last Saturday's 74-52 at LSU. But the knee continues to trouble the 6-foot-8 junior, and team doctors X-rayed the knee on Monday to see whether he had something other than routine tendinitis.

Point guard Scottie Wilbekin said the broken ring finger on his shooting hand is healing, as are Murphy's ribs. But one hard blow to the injured area of either player could be a setback.

With key players banged up, other players have stepped up their play.

Freshman guard Michael Frazier III had a career-high seven boards at LSU as the Gators outrebounded the Tigers by 19.

"That shows a lot about (our) team," Young said. "Just wait until we have everybody healthy."

Until then, veterans like Young will have to bear an extra load during the team's only Thursday-Saturday stretch of the season.

Young is ready.

"My freshman year I was like, 'Wow, I can't believe I have another game already. Now I understand you have to really be focused on scouting because that's what saves you most of the time. Coach Donovan is going to make sure we have our legs ready for Saturday."

French troops go after Mali militants on ground

PARIS French troops pressed northward in Mali toward territory occupied for months by Islamist militants on Wednesday, military officials said, announcing the start of a land assault that will put soldiers in direct combat "within hours."

French ground operations began overnight in Mali, said Adm. Edouard Guillaud, the French military chief of staff. France's defence minister said soldiers were headed away from the relative safety of the capital toward the rebel strongholds in the north of the West African former French colony.

Five days of air strikes have done little to erode the Islamist gains, which some in the West fear could turn the region into a launching pad for terrorist attacks.

The ground assault reversed France's earlier insistence that it would provide only air and logistical support for a military intervention led by African troops.

"Now we're on the ground," Guillaud said. "We will be in direct combat within hours."

On Tuesday, France announced it was increasing the number of troops from 800 to 2,500. The offensive was to have been led by thousands of African troops pledged by Mali's neighbors, but they have yet to arrive, making it increasingly apparent that France will be leading the attack rather than playing a supporting role.

A French military spokesman said Tuesday the Islamists had managed to seize more territory despite the air assault because the fighters were embedding themselves with the population, making it difficult to bomb without causing civilian casualties. He spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with military protocol.

Guillaud said the militant groups had a history of taking human shields and France would do its utmost to make sure civilians were not wrongly targeted.

"When in doubt, we will not fire," he said.

Supplies for the French forces arrived in a steady stream Tuesday, part of the enormous logistics operation needed to support thousands of troops in the baking Sahara sun, a terrain the Islamists have operated in for nearly a decade. Transport planes bringing military hardware landed in quick succession on the short airstrip: A giant Antonov, two C-17 Boeings and a C-160 disgorged equipment in preparation for a land offensive to try to seize back the northern territory held since April by a trio of rebel groups affiliated with al Qaeda.

Burly French troops in fatigues carried boxes of munitions as armored personnel carriers lined up at the airport's gasoline pump. Roughly 40 armored vehicles were driven in overnight by French soldiers stationed in Ivory Coast. They include the ERC-90, a six-wheeled vehicle mounted with a 90mm cannon. Dozens of French Marines camped out on the cement floor of an airport hangar.

Although at least 13 countries have offered support to the Mali mission, only France so far has soldiers there. On Tuesday, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta reiterated the Obama administration's position, saying no American troops will be sent. The U.S. is helping with communications and intelligence-gathering, and may allow American aircraft to help with transport.

Olympics may drop cycling over Lance Armstrong revelations

Lance Armstrong displays his bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. (Getty Images)Fallout from Lance Armstrong's revelations of doping, to be disclosed in an Oprah Winfrey television interview on Thursday, could end up costing cycling a spot in future Olympic Games.

[Dan Wetzel: Questions Oprah should have asked Lance Armstrong]

Still unknown in the Armstrong revelations is whether he will implicate others along with himself. If indeed Armstrong tries to take others, particularly the sport's governing body, down with him, the International Olympic Committee may have no choice but to keep cycling out of the Games.

"We could say, 'look, you've clearly got a problem why don't we give you four years, eight years to sort it out," Dick Pound of the IOC told Reuters. "And when you think you're ready come on back we'll see whether it would be a good idea to put you back on the program."

Pound has experience in these matters, as he formerly led the World Anti-Doping Agency. He indicated that the UCI, cycling's governing body, has not taken sufficiently strong action, and that the IOC might need to strongarm cycling on its own.

"The only way [cycling] is going to clean up is if all these people say 'hey, we're no longer in the Olympics and that's where we want to be so let's earn our way back into it,'" Pound said. "It was the same in weightlifting a few years ago, all of a sudden when you get right up against it things go fuzzy and they say, 'Well, we can't punish innocent athletes in these sports by dropping the sport from the program.'"

[Y! TV: When to watch Lance Armstrong's interview with Oprah]

Pound has a reputation for taking on corruption, having started WADA and helped take action in the IOC itself after the scandals of Salt Lake City's Olympic corruption. WADA was founded after a doping scandal in the 1998 Tour de France.

No changes in cycling's Olympic status are likely before the election of a new IOC president next year. And any changes will be dependent on whether Armstrong does in fact attempt to include others in the conspiracy.

New-car sales to grow 6.6 percent to 15.3 million in 2013: Polk

(Reuters) - New-vehicle sales are expected to top 15 million this year, helped by growth in the large pickup truck sector and an improving economy, according to market research firm Polk.

New car and truck registrations, which closely track sales, are expected to rise 6.6 percent in 2013 to 15.3 million vehicles, Polk said. Sales are expected to finish 2012 at about 14.5 million vehicles.

Polk expects registrations to rise to 15.8 million vehicles in 2014, and 16.2 million in 2016, to settle at 16 million in 2016. Industry sales last topped 16 million in 2007.

"The auto sector is likely to continue to be one of the key sectors that leads the U.S. economic recovery," Anthony Pratt, director of forecasting for the Americas at Polk, said in a statement. "However, we don't expect to realize pre-recession levels in the 17 million vehicles range for many years."

The forecast underscores the industry's relative strength amid robust demand through the end of 2012, with December sales expected to finish with an annual selling rate of 15.2 million vehicles when automakers report results on Thursday.

Polk said new vehicle introductions in the U.S. market will rise dramatically in 2013 to a planned 43, up nearly 50 percent from 2012. In addition, 60 vehicle redesigns are expected in 2013.

Polk expects growth in the full-size pickup truck segment in 2013 and into the 2014 model year as General Motors Co , Toyota Motor Corp and Ford Motor Co are set to introduce redesigned vehicles in the next 18 to 24 months. Polk also expects the midsize sedan market to continue to grow and lead the industry.

Justin Bieber paparazzo killed: Lessons from this tragedy?

Justin Bieber paparazzo killed: On Tuesday, a photographer was killed by a vehicle while chasing pop star Justin Bieber. In today's celebrity-driven culture, how can paparazzo tragedies like this be avoided?

By Laura Edwins,?Contributor / January 2, 2013

Singer Justin Bieber performs during the Z100 Jingle Ball at Madison Square Gardens in New York, on Dec. 7. A celebrity photographer was struck and killed by a car on a Los Angeles highway on January 1, after snapping photographs of a Ferrari registered to pop star Justin Bieber, police said.

The incident harkens memories of Princess Diana's tragic death 15 years ago. While this time it was the paparazzo ?? not the celebrity ? who paid the price, this tragedy raises again questions about privacy vs. First Amendment rights, stalking vs. publicity, and the perception of "the money shot."

The photographer, whose name has not been officially released, was chasing Bieber?s white Ferrari. According to CNN and gossip site Gawker,? the photographer crossed Sepulveda Boulevard and began snapping pictures while the car was parked.

Police repeatedly told him to return to his car, and while re-crossing Sepulveda to leave, the photographer was struck by on-coming traffic. Bieber was not in the car at the time; a friend was reportedly driving it.

In 2010, the state of California passed the ?Paparazzi Bill? in an effort to avoid such incidents. The law cracked down on photographers for reckless driving, blocking sidewalks, and creating a sense of ?false imprisonment,? in pursuit of celebrity photographs.

The amendments included fining photographers up to $5,000 ? or a year in jail ? for breaking traffic laws or impeding the operation of a celebrity's vehicle.

Despite the law and others protecting against stalking, the reckless pursuit of Hollywood?s glitterati continued. In July, after a similar incident involving Bieber and a photographer in a high-speed chase, Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine told CNN the paparazzi pursuit of Bieber was, ??a tragedy waiting to happen.?

Authorities tried to use the new California "paparazzi law" in this hot-pursuit case, but Judge Thomas Rubinson of Los Angeles County Superior Court ruled on Nov. 13, that the law was overly broad. He said, "The law is problematic because it covers news-gathering activities protected by the First Amendment."

11 Business Blogging Lessons Learned After 1.2 Million Words

blogging lessons learnedHappy New Year and Welcome 2013!

Also, Happy Birthday to TopRank?s Online Marketing Blog!

A little over 9 years ago I started this blog as a way to save and share links to industry news. Over the years it has evolved in many ways thanks to our community and our team at TopRank.

Since 2003 Online Marketing Blog has generously shared thousands of posts, reaching millions of online marketers all over the world. Every time I speak at a conference, whether it?s in New York or Sydney or London, multiple people approach me with thanks for our blog?s contribution of insight, tips and useful information. That feedback is priceless and very much appreciated.

Now for some thanks back:

  • Thank you to our 50,000 subscribers and the hundreds of thousands of people who visit via the web and from social networks.
  • BIG THANKS to the companies who hired our agency TopRank Online Marketing after reading, following, listening and engaging with us.
  • Thanks also to journalists and bloggers who reach out, cite us and reference our content in their stories.
  • Thanks to our first time ever sponsors Trackur, Unbounce, Raven Tools, PRWeb, Acquisio and Digital People.
  • Thanks to the?authors and industry?thought leaders who have written guest posts for us.
  • Thanks to the team at TopRank Online Marketing (Alexis, Brian, Evan, Jolina, Mike Y. and Miranda) that contributed posts, liveblogged conferences and engaged with our community.
  • Of course a BIG thanks goes to Ashley Zeckman for consistent contributions each and every week, including the most popular blog post on Online Marketing Blog for all of 2012!
  • THANK YOU for reading, sharing and providing us with an even richer experience on the web. I hope you find our contributions useful and look forward to connecting with you on and offline.

With BlogWorld?s New Media Expo (NMX) conference coming up next weekend, I think it?s incredibly timely for a blog birthday post that shares tips from years of first hand experience. I appreciate that there?s a lot of advice on blogging out there and for those that want to hear from someone that has been at it for a very long time and with great results, this post might be of interest.

1. You Can?t Score Without A Goal

There?s really no way to predict 100% what a blog will do for your business, but at a minimum, a blog can serve as a direct communications platform for your company to reach all audiences that you might want to engage with. Setting goals and having a purpose is essential for any business investment in time and money. Otherwise, how will you know how to create your plan or when you?re successful?

My initial goals were simply to be functional and useful. Then they extended to things like traffic, search visibility and referred traffic to our company website. Now we can count a variety of goals that include customer acquisition, recruiting, industry media coverage, conference speaking and private workshops for companies, industry networking and other engagement, growth, retention and advocacy goals.

2. After the Honeymoon It?s Going to Take Work

When companies launch new blogs there?s excitement about the promise of creating a new way of communicating with prospects, customers, new employes and the media. ?The people responsible for creating content often have other responsibilities besides the company blog. Seeing your hard work published for the world to see, the first comments and mentions of your posts on industry websites is exciting.

That excitement, or ?honeymoon period? is going to wear off. ?Developing and maintaining a productive business blog takes work. It also means working smart. Many of the solutions to that work/hard smart observation are in the rest of this post. Just be aware that after you start a business blog or hire a dedicated blogger, there will be a period of over optimism and then reality will set in regarding being able to maintain several quality posts per week, keeping up with comments and being able to show a return on the time spent.

3. Failing to Plan is a Plan to Fail

When I first started a blog, Minneapolis digerati Garrick Van Buren asked me what my blogging strategy was. I replied that I had none, it was purely an experiment. The look of disbelief he gave was a bit of a lightbulb moment. It took me a while to develop a sold strategy after that, but things really ramped up after I did.

A plan can be as simple as outlining a hypothesis about what a blog will do for you or your company and the steps you think are necessary to reach those goals. ?If you want to be known as the king of ?red widgets? then planning blog posts around that topic will help advance that goal. That means topics from the reader?s perspective, not just editorialized advertisements for the brand. It also means planning networking, outreach, off-blog commenting and integration with other digital and offline messaging. ?A good blog can be a force multiplier for a social media or digital marketing effort.

4. Blog For Your Audience, Not Just Self Expression

I know one of the motivations for many individual bloggers is self expression. The motivation of expression is very powerful. But it can lead you away from reaching business goals.

When it comes to blogging for a business, it?s essential to identify business objectives and audience interests right along with self expression. The flavor of ?personality? added to blogged content that serves the needs of your readership is a lot more valuable than a rant. Accurate and timely information is more shareable and travels farther when a business blog has a particular voice. Self expression and business goals do not need to be mutually exclusive with business blogging.

Growing your blog audience means building community. People will often only show as much interest in your business blog as the interest you show in the community. So engage, ask and answer questions relevant to the topics your target audience is interested in. Tapping into those ongoing experiences means content that your audience will care about and a never ending source of new ideas.

5.??Stand For Something

While it?s important to use empathy with your community to identify topics that will attract and engage them, it?s also important to communicate your key values and unique selling proposition. ?With thousands of blog posts and even more social media updates published every day, there?s a lot of competition for your community?s time. ?By aligning your key business values and unique selling proposition with the content plan for your blog, you?ll provide a stronger signal that will help your brand stand out.

6. Grow Promotion Networks Months Before You Need Them

Great content isn?t great until people can find it, read it and share it with others. With a business blog, that means incorporating promotion into the?editorial?process. The free blog content planning spreadsheet?we published a while back provides for the usual, dates, topics, keywords and media. It also includes planning how certain blog posts will be promoted. Make promotion part of the process.

Writing a fantastic post and then deciding to reach out to people you haven?t connected with in a year or more to help you promote it, probably isn?t going to get the response you expected. ?As you plan your blog?s overall topics and themes, start reaching out via comments and social networks to the movers and shakers on those topics. Show value first, ie ?give to get?. ?When the time comes to promote, those networks where you?ve invested time and created value are more likely to return the favor.

Better yet, they?ve subscribed to your blog and are already helping to share because the content is relevant and useful.

7. Maintain a Queue

One of the biggest concerns companies have over corporate blogging is being able to maintain high quality content over time. ?I can assure you, I?ve learned this lesson many times. ?One of the keys to maintaining quality is to stay connected with your community and the industry. Take notes of trending topics and connections that you see. I like to use Evernote to nurture these ideas until they become budding blog posts.

Beyond planning topics and writing in advance, keep a queue of blog posts that you can draw from. Sitting down and writing a 2,000 word blog post like this one can take a long time, time that you don?t have. Rather, add to it from time to time. ?It?s easier spending a few minutes here and there on a post over a period of days or weeks than trying to find 1-2 hours of uninterrupted time.

8. Integrate With Other Digital Communications

A blog is not and should not be an island. ?A blog can serve many communication and engagement purposes from marketing to PR to customer service. Integrating the blog content plan with a company?s overall content marketing strategy should be a given, but often is not. Blogs can be excellent places for?repurposing?other digital content. ?They can provide support to other digital marketing content and advertising as well. ?Integrating key messages from other business communications and promotions into the blog editorial plan will help amplify those key messages in a natural way.

9. Ask for Help

As I?ve mentioned previously, I?ve written over 2,000 blog posts myself which amounts to over 1.2 million words. ?It took me a long time to learn the lesson of asking for help. I didn?t hire an internal marketer until 8 years of blogging. ?A diversity of bloggers helps spread the workload, it introduces new voices that may better resonate than your own, ?and for business blogging it can tap into subject matter experts that would otherwise go unpublished.

Asking for help goes beyond content contribution to social?participation. Giving relevant team members a heads up about a particularly special blog post may result in more social sharing. The same goes for sharing on social networks.

The key to asking for help is to make it crystal clear what you want the person to do, make it easy for them to do and give feedback upon completion. People will work for a living but die for recognition. Make sure you recognize contributors that are actually helping advance the blogging effort ? content, sharing or both.

10. Adaptability and Agility

Whether it?s listening to other blogs and emerging stories in the news or mining topics most often mention in your comments and the site search queries, adaptability is key. Leverage data from web analytics, social media monitoring services and even Google Alerts to identify mentions of your blog, trending topics and what your community is actually?responding?to. Adapt editorial as you need to and even ?newsjack? to tap into emerging news stories that you can be a part of. This requires speed and active monitoring but can be well worth it.

Speaking of speed, responding quickly to comments on the blog shows you value contribution and participation. Since so much content on a blog can get shared through services like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+, it?s important to monitor those services too, in order to acknowledge commentary or to participate in resulting discussions from your posts.

11. ?Everybody Makes Mistakes

A blog for the blog owner is like a baby and you want everything perfect. Or like in my case, I?ve been at it for over 9 years. There are things I know that have taken a very long time that someone new to the business blogging world isn?t going to pickup overnight. No matter how many processes, checks and balances that you put in place, errors can occur. Whether it?s a type (the bane of my blogging existence) or a bad link or just bad writing.

Few companies have the luxury of a blog editor who can read through every post, check every link and also edit for style. But even when you don?t, it?s important to hold a standard for quality. ?Even with that standard, mistakes will be made. ?Identify them, correct them and move on.

BONUS. ?Measure What Matters

In my world, blogging serves multiple objectives including marketing, PR, Recruiting and Customer Service. ?In order for the effort of 5 posts a week (except yesterday) to pay off, it?s important to monitor the KPIs that lead to business value and to make changes

Think about the customer or audience journey to decide what?s important for you to measure. From creating awareness of your category and interest in your brand, to being included during consideration of different services or products to the ultimately being chosen, creating, promoting, monitoring and optimizing blog content performance is essential. The path for marketing as I just outline is very different than for recruiting or customer service.

Just make sure you can tap into analytics resources to measure progress and outcomes that the blog is contributing to. You?ll be able to show value of course but also tap into the information you?ll need to optimize performance of your investment.

I could write (another) book about blogging for business, so these insights are just the tip of the iceberg. If you stick around a while, you?ll hear many more.

If you?ve been blogging for a while, what are some of your best lessons learned?

PopTrayU

One of the few utilities that I can't imagine living without is an e-mail notifier running in the Windows system tray, and the best I've found is a freeware open-source gem, PopTrayU. My main reason for wanting PopTrayU on my system is the obvious one?I want it to pop up a window that alerts me to new incoming mail. But I also want it for the less obvious, and slightly counter-intuitive reason, that it helps me to concentrate on my other work. With PopTrayU running in the system tray, and set to check new mail at regular intervals, I'm less tempted than I would otherwise be to open my mail client obsessively to see whether anyone has dropped me a line.

PopTrayU stands out from other mail notifiers with its clean, customizable design and complete keyboard support. Other notifiers tend to display either large, cluttered windows or tiny indicators with merely the number of new messages but no details. PopTrayU gives me the option of opening a tiny indicator or exactly what I want in a mail notifier, which is a compact window that lists the sender, subject, and time of each new message. If I click on one of the messages in the list, a preview window displays its contents, or I can right-click on the message and delete it or open my mail client and reply to it.

I like the way PopTrayU can be set up to list only new messages, not the hundreds of messages that I've accumulated in my inbox. I regularly check four or more accounts, and PopTrayU displays each on a separate tab, and lets me temporarily disable checking any account that I don't want distracting me.

Unlike every other mail notifier I've tried, PopTrayU lets me assign hotkeys to all its functions, so that, if I don't want to wait until the app performs its scheduled mail check, I can simply type Ctrl-Alt-C (or any other key-combination that I choose) and wait a few seconds while the app checks my mail. Of course I can also click on its tray icon, but keyboard is far more efficient and less distracting. An enormous range of options lets me specify periods when the app won't check mail, or exactly how many lines of a message to display in the preview window, or exactly how I want the program to notify me. A useful security option lets you password-protect the whole program against prying eyes.

PopTrayU is an update to a popular ten-year-old mail notifier called PopTray, originally written by Renier Crause, and now being updated by Jessica Brown with encouragement from the original author. The new version is currently in open beta, and still has a couple of rough edges that are scheduled to be smoothed out soon. For example, if you want to set up PopTrayU to check an account through the modern IMAP mail protocol, instead of the old-school POP protocol, you'll need to download and install the IMAP plug-in for PopTray from htttp://www.poptray.org/plugins.php. The new developer plans to integrate the app's plug-ins in a forthcoming beta version.

When you click Reply on PopTrayU's menus, the app launches your mail client, which is typically Thunderbird or Outlook. Even when I'm sending mail through web-based services like Gmail or Microsoft's new Outlook.com, I prefer to use a mail client, not the mail service's browser-based interface. But I'd like to see an option in PopTrayU that would let me click a message in its list of messages in my Gmail account and have my browser open Gmail's web interface. Maybe I'll get my wish in a feature version. Meanwhile, for anyone who uses a mail client, as I do, PopTrayU is an indispensable time-saver and distraction-reducer. Even as a work in progress, PopTrayU is better-designed than any of the dozen or more rival mail-checkers I've tried over the years.
