ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? Expectant mothers who dealt with the strain of a hurricane or major tropical storm passing nearby during their pregnancy had children who were at elevated risk for abnormal health conditions at birth, according to a study led by a Princeton University researcher that offers new insights into the effects of stress on pregnancy.
The study used birth records from Texas and meteorological information to identify children born in the state between 1996 and 2008 whose mothers were in the path of a major tropical storm or hurricane during pregnancy. The children's health at birth was compared with that of siblings whose gestation didn't coincide with a major weather event.
The study found that mothers living within 30 kilometers of a hurricane's path during their third trimester were 60 percent more likely to have a newborn with abnormal conditions, which are detailed on birth records. Those conditions included being on a ventilator for more than 30 minutes or experiencing meconium aspiration, which occurs when a newborn breathes in a mixture of meconium -- or early feces -- and amniotic fluid around the time of delivery. Increased risk was also found following exposure to weather-related stressors in the first trimester, while evidence was less clear for exposure in the second trimester. The researchers were able to isolate the impact of stress caused by the storm from other factors, such as changes in the availability of health care in a storm's aftermath.
The study breaks ground by honing in on new -- and potentially better -- ways to measure the impact of prebirth stress on newborns and opens avenues for further research into the potential impact on such children's later development, said lead researcher Janet Currie, Princeton's Henry Putnam Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and director of the Center for Health and Wellbeing.
"Probably the most important finding of our study is that it does seem like being subjected to stress in pregnancy has some negative effect on the baby, but that the effect is more subtle than some of the previous studies have suggested," said Currie, who conducted the study along with Maya Rossin-Slater, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Economics at Columbia University.
Anna Aizer, associate professor of economics and public policy at Brown University who wasn't involved in the study, said the research "really raises the bar in terms of identification of the effect of stressful events in-utero on birth outcomes."
"Previous work has not really been able to isolate the effect as well as Currie and Rossin-Slater have," said Aizer, whose research focuses on issues related to children's well-being.
Meconium aspiration -- usually a sign of fetal distress -- and other respiratory problems that necessitate a baby being placed on a ventilator can generally be treated successfully, but the study offers new paths for future research about the long-term health of children born in the wake of stressful events such as hurricanes.
"I think there's every reason to believe that if you have a better measure of child health -- like you knew this child was having breathing problems at birth -- that might be a stronger predictor of longer-term outcomes," Currie said. "There's a lot of interest in this whole area of how things that happen very early in life can affect future outcomes."
Previous research into the impact of similar types of stress has found changes in length of gestation and birth weight, but the new study didn't find a significant effect on those measures, Currie said.
Currie said one explanation for the difference is that the new study utilized data that allowed the researchers to control for changes in the population of an area around the time of a storm that could have affected the previous findings. Earlier research hasn't been able to account for the way the population of an area changes around the time of a stressful event -- with people of certain demographic groups more likely than others to move away or stay nearby.
The new study included data on eight hurricanes and tropical storms that hit any part of Texas between 1996 and 2008 and caused more than $10 million damage. The most damaging storms were Tropical Storm Allison in 2001, which caused more than $50 billion in damage and 40 deaths, and Hurricane Ike, which caused $19.3 billion in damage and 103 deaths.
Experiencing a hurricane or major tropical storm can have a significant impact on people that goes well beyond stress. However, Currie said the researchers were able to determine that findings related to abnormal health conditions at birth generally weren't tied to disruption of medical care or property damage caused by the storms, such as damage to an expectant mother's home that might lead to injury or increased risk of illness. They also found little consistent evidence that the stress associated with storms affected mothers' behaviors, such as smoking, eating as reflected in weight gain and use of prenatal care.
One potential cause of the health problems found in the study is an increase in stress hormones caused by the storm, which occurred in what is known as the neuroendocrine pathway.
"I think the takeaway finding is that it's worth doing more focused research on those pathways and looking for more subtle effects on the fetus than just looking at birth weight and preterm delivery," Currie said. "And it would be really great if we could follow over time and see what happens to children who are affected by these types of events."
Aizer said the research could also have implications beyond the context of natural disasters.
"Previous work has shown poor mothers are exposed to more stressors. Currie and Rossin-Slater's work suggests that exposure to stress might be one of the mechanisms explaining why poor women have worse birth outcomes," Aizer said. "Policymakers concerned with improving the outcomes of poor families should consider these findings."
The study, which is described in a working paper circulated in May by the National Bureau of Economic Research, was supported by funding from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

We'll skip the long contextual intro about how high-powered Tegra 3 tablets are becoming a dime a dozen and get straight to the meat: the new Acer Iconia Tab A700 is an NVIDIA-powered slate with a super-charged screen. Yes, this device is all about the display, and we're talking 1920 x 1200 pixels on a 10.1-inch panel. And until ASUS' Transformer Pad Infinity goes on sale next month, this is the only Android tab with that resolution you can get your hands on.
At the risk of spoiling our whole review, bright colors and a high resolution make navigating Acer's branded build of Ice Cream Sandwich a treat, and its quad-core Tegra 3 insides make the tablet more than just a pretty face. But the WiFi-only Tab A700, retailing for $450, is not the only good ICS option around -- and it's not the most budget-friendly, either. Let's take a closer look to see if its considerable advantages make it worth swiping that plastic.
Acer Iconia Tab A700 review: a 10-inch ICS tablet with Tegra 3 and a 1920 x 1200 display originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 26 Jun 2012 14:45:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

If you're interested in acquiring an exotic bird as a pet and are prepared to make a substantial and lifelong commitment to it, I highly recommend you contact your local animal shelter and/or exotic bird sanctuaries in your area. The latter, in particular, are often overwhelmed with beautiful, wonderful, abandoned and rescued birds in need of new forever homes.
I can't stress enough the importance of understanding what you're getting into when you take on an exotic bird. They are not simply colorful, entertaining cage decorations. Exotics are high-maintenance pets -- expensive, messy, noisy, time-consuming, unpredictable, and sometimes aggressive.
These birds may make wonderful companions for knowledgeable, dedicated owners who have the time and other resources required to ensure the best possible quality of life for their pets.
Exotic Bird Care Basics
1. An appropriately-sized cage that is cozy and located in a safe, low stress but social area. Your bird's cage should be twice the size of your bird's outstretched wings, minimally. Buy the biggest cage you can afford. I recommend a variety of all-natural wood perches (not dowels) throughout the cage.
It should have a roof perch and contain several toys, bells, colored blocks and ropes for chewing. The more natural foraging options and toys, the happier the bird. Replace toys several times a month to keep birds interested in their environment.
The cage should be cleaned daily. Many bird owners wear a surgical mask and gloves to reduce the chance of inhaling feather dander or fecal-borne pathogens. The cage floor should be lined with newspaper that is discarded daily.
All loose material (feathers, leftover feed, bird poop) should be carefully disposed of before disinfecting cage surfaces. Birds should be removed from the area during the disinfecting process. Make sure to pick a non-toxic, bird-friendly disinfectant. I use diluted vinegar on my bird cages and stands.
2. Generally speaking, it is best to feed a high-quality diet of species-specific commercial pelleted food (not seed mix, which is the equivalent of junk food for most exotic birds), fruits, veggies, and sprouted grains. Many exotics are designed by nature to live a long, long time -- the better their nutrition, the healthier and longer they'll live.
Exotic parrots do not require a source of gravel or grit in their diet (unlike pigeons and other types of birds).
Please note: If you're a novice bird owner caring for a species of exotic you're unfamiliar with, or have encountered a problem with feeding, you should talk with an avian veterinarian or other exotic bird specialist about how to proceed. Providing adequate, appropriate nutrition for an individual bird can be a complex process, so it's best to seek the advice of an expert. Never change your bird's diet abruptly.
3. Birds do get dirty and were designed to be rained on, so bathing is often necessary. Many exotics love baths -- some will splash around in a pan of shallow water, others will join their owners in the shower, still others enjoy a gentle spray mist from a water bottle.
4. Beyond the initial expense of the bird, owners of larger exotic birds should plan to spend around $100 a month for food, toys and other supplies. Birds need annual medical exams from an avian veterinarian to make sure they are healthy. Birds are masters at hiding disease; oftentimes the only way you know they are ill is through bloodwork. All newly-acquired birds should be examined by an avian vet for infectious diseases.
5. Just because birds live in cages doesn't mean they are easy pets to care for. You can't just pop your exotic into his cage and ignore him except at feeding time. Parrots are extremely intelligent creatures, and their owners must be prepared to spend a great deal of time interacting with them. To keep my African grey happy and content, he lives outside of his cage all day and is only placed in his cage at night to sleep.
Hand-raised, exotic birds thrive on human attention and develop emotional and behavioral issues when they don't receive adequate mental stimulation. Experts recommend that some types of exotics, parrots for example, be allowed out of the cage to interact with their human family members for several hours every day.
During the time a bird must be caged (when they cannot be directly supervised), playing classical music is a good way to provide additional stimulation.
6. Birds were meant to have exposure to direct sunlight for many hours a day. In fact, sunlight is important for a bird's emotional, mental and nutritional wellbeing. The correct spectrum of ultraviolet (UV) light birds require for health is filtered out by window glass and screens. I recommend providing all birds access to UV light via a special UV "bird bulb" over their cage for several hours a day.
Three Cool Tips for Living in Harmony With a Bird
? To nurture a good relationship between you and your exotic bird, keep him at mid-chest level. Birds in the wild sit in trees according to a specific pecking order, with the more dominant members of the flock in the upper branches.
At home, a bird held at waist level will be prone to feel insecure and nervous; holding him at or above shoulder level will likely make him feel he's the boss.
? Most exotic birds are noisy. You won't change this fact. Raising your voice or scolding a chatty bird will only entertain her and encourage her to match you shriek for shriek, until she's shrieking all the time. Ignoring the screaming and rewarding the quiet is the only positive approach to this innate, sometimes annoying, natural behavior.
? Reward your bird often for good behavior with food, conversation and affection.

Her goal is to help you create wellness in order to prevent illness in the lives of your pets. This proactive approach seeks to save you and your pet from unnecessary stress and suffering by identifying and removing health obstacles even before disease occurs. Unfortunately, most veterinarians in the United States are trained to be reactive. They wait for symptoms to occur, and often treat those symptoms without addressing the root cause.

University of Texas at Austin, Texas Advanced Computing Center
From Earth, observers use telescopes to look and learn about the distant luminous spheres. But the telescope often isn't the only instrument used. Karl Gebhardt, professor of astrophysics at The University of Texas at Austin and one of the principal investigators for the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) project, makes revolutionary discoveries about dark matter by combining deep-space observations with the powerful Lonestar supercomputer at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC).
Dark matter exerts a gravitational pull on matter in a galaxy, including stars, which orbit the center of the galaxy. Since dark matter neither emits nor absorbs light or other electromagnetic radiation, it cannot be seen directly with telescopes. However, through indirect evidence, scientists estimate that dark matter constitutes 83% of the matter in the universe and 23% of the mass-energy.
This represents a significant portion of the universe. For that reason, astronomers like Gebhardt feel compelled to learn more about dark matter, its influences on the formation of galaxies, and its effects on the structure of the cosmos.
"We believe dark matter is a new type of particle that has yet to be discovered," Gebhardt said. "In a lot of our experiments, we hone in on it, even though we don't know its nature yet."
To detect dark matter, researchers collect data on the motions of stars. This data drives simulations and provides a means of distinguishing the effects of dark matter on a galaxy.
Gebhardt works with two teams, one at the McDonald Observatory, a research unit of The University of Texas at Austin, and the other at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The data collection involves the Mitchell Spectrograph, a 2.7-meter telescope at the McDonald Observatory, and the NASA Hubble Space Telescope. Based on the data he receives, Gebhardt builds computer models and maps to represent the distribution of dark matter throughout different galaxies.
Telescopes are time-travelling devices, enabling scientists to see earlier eras of the cosmos. But astronomers can't look back enough light-years to actually view the development of the early universe directly, so theoretical models and computer simulations continue to be a significant element in current research.
For a long time a discrepancy persisted between what observers and theorists found from observations of dark matter and the computational models of dark matter.
"We are trying to put that to rest by making a definitive study of how the dark matter is distributed," Gebhardt said.
Dark matter tends to lie at the edge of the galaxy, beyond the visible components of the galaxy. This means simulations to explore dark matter cannot be too localized and need to account for an almost unfathomable number of elements. About a hundred billion galaxies can be seen from the observatory. Each galaxy has of an order of ten billion stars. So there are a lot of elements to study, Gebhardt said.
"The large number of data sets require a huge computer program that can basically mimic a galaxy," Gebhardt said. "That's why we need a supercomputer."
In 2004, Gebhardt received his first allocation on the original Lonestar supercomputer at TACC. As TACC's computational resources have grown, Gebhardt's simulations have also continued to advance. Now, his research teams include about a dozen researchers around the world.
"Before using TACC resources, I would run the data on my computer, crunching continuously, but it would take me a month just to process the data sets of one galaxy," Gebhardt said. "Now it takes about two hours."
Using Lonestar, Gebhardt creates nearly 100,000 different models of one galaxy, representing the range of possible ways stars can move throughout a galaxy.
The stars orbit the center of a galaxy, and the orbital speed remains equal among all stars, regardless of the distance from the center. Those findings led to the idea that dark matter acts as an attracting force, pulling matter toward it.
"We are learning a lot and are finding a different answer than what most theorists had predicted," Gebhardt said.
Through the simulations, Gebhardt has determined that the dark matter is more spread out at the edge of the galaxy than considered in the past.
"The total amount of dark matter is the same as previously assumed, but it is fluffier [more distributed] than we thought," Gebhardt said.
Gebhardt's research process works by trying to mimic the galaxy on the computer. He then compares the simulation to reality by using observationsfrom the Mitchell Spectrographof how the stars are moving. Next, he repeats the process 100,000 times with different simulations. From the whole set of simulations, he finally selects the one model that is the best representation of the data.
"The model that best mimics the data then determines the structure of the dark matter and how the stars orbit in the galaxy," Gebhardt explained.
Initial results of Gebhardt's research were published in the Astrophysical Journal in January 2012.
Gebhardt's studies of dark matter provide information about its fundamental properties, which may help scientists substantiate previous theories or generate new findings about the functioning of the universe.
Next year, the National Science Foundation and academic partners will deploy Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX), the first major experiment to search for the evolution of dark energy, the mysterious force causing the expansion of the universe to speed up over time.
Over three years, HETDEX will collect data on at least one million galaxies that are nine billion to 11 billion light-years away, yielding the largest map of the universe ever produced. The map will allow astronomers to measure how fast the universe was expanding at different times in history. The project will use the giant Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory and a set of spectrographs to map the three-dimensional positions of one million galaxies. HETDEX will generate about one petabyte (one million gigabytes) of data and require a lot of computer processing cycles.
"It will be a huge amount of data," Gebhardt said. "So we will continue to be large users of TACC allocations."
Gebhardt will carry on investigating galaxies, searching for the next discovery about the matter that exists beyond the stars.
"I want to understand how the entire universe works," Gebhardt said. "And no other field but astronomy can say that its answers are out of this world."
